Venezuela took home its first World Baseball Classic title, defeating the United States in a 3-2 thriller on March 17, 2026. The World Baseball Classic (WBC) is an international baseball tournament where players get the chance to represent their country and face their league teammates. It includes 20 teams, which are first split into four pools for a preliminary round-robin. The top two teams of each pool advance to the elimination bracket. This event is hosted during Spring Training of Major League Baseball (MLB) and serves as a functional preview to MLB players.
Venezuela pulled through the preliminary rounds with a 3-1 record, only dropping to the Dominican Republic, which later lost to the United States in the semifinals. Venezuela won against Japan in the quarterfinals, marking a major shift in the tournament. Japan had won three out of the past five tournaments and was favored to win. Compared to the major stars on team Japan, Venezuela was the underdog, yet they managed to pull ahead to an 8-5 victory.
Venezuela continued to progress into the semifinals, facing Italy. Venezuelan third baseman Maikel Garcia, who would later become the tournament MVP, hit a go-ahead single, bringing in Venezuelan centerfielder Jackson Chourio. This ultimately led Venezuela to a 4-2 victory. Additionally, Garcia hit a sacrifice fly to get Venezuela on the board in the final against the United States, giving his team an early lead. In the bottom of the eighth, American first baseman Bryce Harper tied the game with a two-run shot, evening the score. While some fans and players might have anticipated an extra-inning showdown after Harper’s game-tying home run, Eugenio Suárez quickly hit an RBI double that gave Venezuela the lead, and later won them the game.
After the heartbreaking loss, American outfielder Aaron Judge said, “They made their pitches… when we didn’t get a pitch, we either popped it up or hit it into the ground. Stuff like that can’t happen… They just went out there and executed their game plan, and we couldn’t get anything going offensively.” Though it was a devastating blow to the United States, Venezuela took home a well-deserved victory.
This victory was a special one for Venezuela, as they were finally able to prove themselves as a top team. Venezuelan Manager Omar López said post-game, “My country right now is celebrating. It’s extremely happy. [The people are] on the streets. They’re drinking right now, and that makes me happier than anybody else in this world because this is the only thing that I can do. This is the only thing that I can do for my country.”
Additionally, this win is also significant from a political standpoint. The U.S. and Venezuela have had tensions since January, when President Trump made the decision to capture Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. However, Venezuela’s victory showed their perseverance and their national pride amidst a politically tense situation.
Before this year’s contest kicked off, Venezuela was not considered one of the most likely contenders for the win. Odds showed the United States, the Dominican Republic, and Japan as the biggest prospects entering the competition. Venezuela was an underrated contender that had a shot, but only if everything lined up perfectly. Japan was the previous champion three years ago, and was supported by major stars such as two-way player Shohei Ohtani and pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto. The Dominican Republic, while it did not have a spectacular result in the past WBC, had a strong coaching staff alongside select MLB stars such as first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and third baseman Manny Machado. The United States’ roster was filled to the brim with MLB stars, from Judge to pitcher Clay Holmes, who play for the Yankees and Mets, respectively.
The 2026 World Baseball Classic ended in a Venezuelan win over the United States in a close game where both teams fought with ferocity and determination, changing the predicted narrative. Now, as we transition into the regular MLB season, fans will be on the lookout for improvements from the United States squad, and there’s anticipation as to which storylines will continue. Most importantly, fans wonder how the struggling players on Team USA will perform for their respective league teams. In the final, the United States didn’t put a runner in scoring position apart from Harper’s home run. The roster consisted of all the American baseball superstars, yet they were unable to capitalize on their strengths. The 2026 MLB season is bound to have highs and lows, especially with the stars of Venezuela on a dopamine rush from their international victory, and the United States players looking to bounce back from their subpar performances.
