Message From The Editorial Board

The Spectator Editorial Board strongly condemns the invasion of Israel by Hamas and the targeting of civilians.

Reading Time: 1 minute

The Israel-Hamas war has taken the lives of over 2,300 Israelis and Palestinians as of October 11, 2023. Since October 7, the lives of innocent civilians have been lost as executions occurred in the streets, homes exploded into rubble, and family members were injured, killed, and taken captive.

The Spectator Editorial Board strongly condemns the invasion of Israel by Hamas and the targeting of civilians. The loss of life in Israel and Palestine is devastating and tragic.

During this time of humanitarian crisis, The Spectator Editorial Board urges everyone to be informed about the situation and respectful of those within the Stuyvesant building and beyond. In times of immense loss of human life, be empathetic.

Be aware of the propaganda, misinformation, and oversimplifications that are rampant across social media platforms. Be aware that both children and adults are advised to delete social media apps, as Hamas has stated that it will post footage of civilian executions—a form of terrorism and psychological warfare. Be aware of the deeply personal nature of this conflict for many members of the Stuyvesant community. Be aware of the impact your words have on others, and use your voice respectfully.

At a time when unity is necessary to advocate for peace, ignorance and hate speech will only create divisions within our community.

Our hearts go out to all those who have tragically lost their lives and to any members of the Stuyvesant community who have been impacted.
