After going undefeated in the regular season, the Stuyvesant girls’ badminton team went on to have one of the most successful playoff runs in program history, making it to the PSAL City Championships final for the second time ever. Although they ultimately fell short, the team was able to overcome the loss of key players and emerge as championship contenders through their tight-knit bond and rigorous training.
Entering the season, the team found itself feeling uncertain after three of its starters had graduated the previous year. These departures left major gaps in the starting lineup and raised questions about how the team would perform with a new group of players stepping up into bigger roles. Despite this, the team remained confident in their abilities and focused on training, while also working towards building a new dynamic. Senior captain Tiffany Chen credited the team’s work ethic as something that helped to ease the transition, saying, “Coming into the season, I knew we would have big shoes to fill… But I also knew that our team had really strong players that were willing to play their hardest and train to get better every day.”
But the transition wasn’t always so easy, and players had to adjust to a more demanding routine. “This season was definitely more difficult in terms of training than the past seasons. Our team put a lot more emphasis on footwork and technique, and that was something that we had to adjust to during our practice,” said Chen. But the work paid off, and the team navigated the season without a loss and entered the playoffs with confidence. After seeing so much success in the regular season, the team’s expectations rose, and so did their motivation, demonstrating the discipline and consistency that they had developed over months together.
However, this success wasn’t only built on pure training, as the close bond the team formed with each other was the most important part of their success. It manifested in small ways, from sharing food to spending almost every day together after school. Over time, players were able to become even closer, which proved to be especially helpful during AP season, when balancing both sport and academics became increasingly difficult. “Even though some days we didn’t always feel up to the task, we always gave it our all during practice. Especially during AP season and the final stretch of the spring semester, seeing people still show up to practice was super motivating. Through the tiredness, a big part of why we gave a lot of our effort is the team aspect. We were each other’s cheerleaders and really helped each other get through the hardest practices,” said Chen.
The team’s growth was put to the test as they entered the playoffs, where each match carried added pressure. Drawing on the confidence they had in the regular season, they cruised past the competition, and by the time they reached the final, they had outscored their playoff opponents 18-2. They opened up their postseason with a 5-0 sweep against Tottenville, which was then followed up in the next round with another 5-0 sweep against York. Even with the competition getting increasingly intense, the team was able to keep its composure, as they continued on to win 4-1 against both Francis Lewis in the quarterfinals and Flushing in the semifinals to secure a spot in the finals. With the momentum and confidence they had built over the postseason, the team entered the final prepared to take on their toughest opponent so far.
This mindset carried into the championship final, where they faced Bronx Science and ultimately lost 3-2. Despite the loss, the team is proud of what they were able to accomplish this year. According to Chen, the “team was really strong this year, not just the starters but also the rest of the team that helped cheer us on throughout all of our games and playoffs. It really was just the fact that our team faced another team that was also extremely talented. All of us tried our best during the final, and we played the best that we could during it.”
While the season may not have ended with a trophy, the team’s playoff run and undefeated regular season will leave a lasting legacy within the program. Beyond their accomplishments on the court, the team’s strong bond speaks for itself, and it will be exciting to see where it brings the team next season.
